Here's How You Can Get Started Today on Your Location-Independent Lifestyle
If you dream of living a lifestyle where you can live wherever and work whenever, then this post is for you.
There is often one thing that prevents those who seek a true “digital nomad” lifestyle from actually doing so: building and creating a profitable online income that is sustainable, and flexible enough to support themselves while they travel the world.
It is no easy feat. Working online for yourself requires self-motivation, commitment, and drive to be able to be accountable to yourself and bring enough money in monthly to make it happen.
However, my readers have expressed to me previously that they don’t know how to build a meaningful career online while traveling the world. Either they don’t want to start an online business, or some guy on the internet told them there was only ONE way to get paid to travel before pitching a $10,000 coaching package.
I’m here to tell you that:
1) there are many ways to work online while traveling
2) you don’t have to pay someone $10,000 for consulting if you don’t want to.
In fact, in this post I want to introduce to you the main strategy that has made up my full-time income over the past 2.5 years with no upfront investment: freelancing.
What is freelancing?
Freelancing is where you work independently, providing services for different companies.
🧐 "Okay, that was vague"
Well, that's because the type of work you do can literally be any type of service - some you may already be familiar with are photographers, graphic designers, or event planners. There are MANY unique ways you can use skills you already have (or can learn) to make money as a freelancer.
And if you're doing freelance work online, it allows you to:
1. work online while you travel,
and/or
2. earn extra cash on the side (that you can put toward travel or whatever else you please)
What do I do as a freelancer? Over the years I've done a mix of social media marketing, Pinterest management/SEO, websites and sales pages, and project management! That came natural to me from blogging & studying marketing in college, so I didn't have to take extra time to learn new skills. Over time, since I've improved my skills, I've been able to raise my rates and land new business.
Since freelancing is service-based, there are a few benefits that may interest you:
1️⃣ Since you're selling a service, you don't have to put time or money into creating products.
2️⃣ You don't need to reinvent the wheel and come up with a brand new idea. Example: a lot of businesses need help with things like graphic design or social media. While that looks different for every brand, it's not like you have to come up with these new, otherworldly concepts to do this well.
3️⃣There is almost always no upfront investment you need to make since you aren’t creating and advertising products. Extra investments like websites or digital advertising don’t hurt, but they aren’t necessary. In fact, I didn’t even create a website for my freelance work until after two years - I simply used my previous client work, this blog, and my own social media pages as a “portfolio.”
How do you balance online work + travel?
I’ve worked and traveled in 26 of the 30 countries I’ve been to across five continents - many of which I did while freelancing online.
One thing I’ve heard from many people who want to work online is that the thought of managing work while traveling seems overwhelming, exhausting, and not doable.
This couldn’t be further from the truth!
Yes, this does depend on the type of online work you’re doing. If you’re in meetings virtually all day every day, then yeah, you’ll still be chained to a desk. But you can explore the place you’re visiting when you’re “off” work.
However, freelancing gives you the flexibility and freedom most online jobs just don’t have.
YOU are the business owner. YOU set your hours. YOU are in control of the income you earn and the money you make.
As long as you’re self-disciplined, motivated, and deliver quality work on time for your clients, you are more than capable of being able to work online while you travel.
